Every once in a while life will throw you a gift. My gifts just happen to have fur and fang-toothed grins.

BUT SHE WAS ALSO BECOMING extremely sassy and would let me know exactly how she felt about something. If she disliked what was going on, she’d walk over with her ears back and scream at me, then casually walk away. But there wasn’t much that she disliked. Most of her disdain was reserved for being bothered when she was busy trying to gobble up things that she wasn’t supposed to, or being woken up before she had decided she’d had enough beauty sleep. The list of things she loved was longer, and that list still began with socks. After I realized that her fixation with socks wasn’t dissipating with age, I began to hide them in my top drawers. I was also extra careful to keep them out of sight when we did laundry. I had thought, “out of sight out of mind,” but it turns out keeping them away from her only made them a delicacy. She would knock over furniture, bite, kick, and scratch her way to them. Once she had her prize, there was no getting the socks back. She ran through the house squealing at the top of her lungs. Her sense of accomplishment made her tail wag so fast it looked more like a propeller. She’d dart into her couch nook with them and they’d never be seen again. That is until the time came for the couch to go.
